Generally, cats are pretty clean creatures. They’re particular about how they smell, look, and feel. And with the amount of self-grooming they do, they might be considered the vainest animals on the planet.
But when they get nasty, they really know how to do it.
If you’re a cat owner, it’s inevitable that sometimes you’re going to have to clean up foul-smelling urine or feces — and I’m not talking about inside the litter box. Whether it’s trying out a new litter or experiencing incontinency problems, nearly all cat owners have had to deal with the mess that comes with cats doing their business outside of the box.
That’s when you’re going to need a top-notch cleaning agent — one specifically designed for cats. But choosing the right cat urine odor and stain remover can be a bit tricky. With so many on the market, how do you figure out which one really works?
We’ve put together a list of reviews for the best cat urine and stain removers on the market to help make your choice that much easier.
A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites
The 10 Best Cat Urine, Odor & Stain Remover – Reviews 2020
1. Simple Solution Extreme Stain & Odor Remover – Best Overall
For us, there’s no doubt that Simple Solution Extreme Stain & Odor Remover is the best overall cleaning agent on the market for cat odors and stains.
It’s a super-powerful cleaning solution that gets tough on hard to eliminate odors. Simple Solution has its own pleasant, yet mild fragrance that cuts deep to mask even the peskiest of smells. It’s great for unneutered toms that begin spraying as well.
And as far as stains go, this solution really works, even on long-term stains. Simply spray the product generously onto the affected area, wait 10 minutes, and blot to remove the stain. No need to rinse with water either. Just let the area dry naturally, and you’re good to go.
We also really like the spray nozzle on the bottle. It’s a quality sprayer with three different settings: foam, stream, and mist. And this product is safe to use on any water-safe surface. It’s also specifically designed to be safe for use around your pets and children. However, this does not mean that you should keep this within reach of children.
The only thing we wish it did better was to prevent subsequent markings. That would just make for the ultimate all-around cleaner.
2. Nature’s Miracle Just For Cats Stain & Odor Remover – Best Value
Nature’s Miracle is a household name among cat owners thanks to its great reputation for being an excellent stain and odor remover. It also just so happens to be our best cat urine, odor, and stain remover for the money.
It can easily fit within any pet owner’s budget and still conquer difficult stains and odors. Nature’s Miracle makes use of enzymatic reactions to remove odors and eradicate stains while leaving behind a gentle citrus scent.
This cleaner can be used on a wide variety of surfaces, too. However, there are some precautions you’ll need to take. Be sure to read the instructions on the bottle. There are some surfaces and materials you have to avoid. Do not use this product on untreated hardwood, leather, suede, silk, or any other specialty fabric. It can deteriorate the quality of the material or cause discoloring.
Also, if you’ve been using Nature’s Miracle for years and still have an old product, be advised that the formula has been changed in recent years. Be sure to test this out before plunging headfirst into a large purchase.
3. Rocco & Roxie Supply Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator – Premium Choice
Are you looking for something that you can use at home that has the strength of a deep commercial clean? Check out Rocco & Roxie Supply Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator. However, be forewarned. This product does not come cheap. But it’s one of those cases where you get what you pay for.
It’s got a natural and bio-enzymatic formula that soaks into whatever surface needs cleaning and takes hold of the set-in stain. And after following the directions on the bottle, it’ll lift right out. And odors? Forget about them. It leaves next to no smell at all. None from the pet stain or from the cleaner itself. It’s actually a pretty strange sensation. You’ll essentially be left with the aroma of whatever you were cleaning.
It’s also made in the USA and set to the highest industry standards. It’s even gotten the approval of the Carpet and Rug Institute.
For the price you’ve got to pay, however, we really wish that this would repel repeat offenders. Doing so would definitely make this a real contender for the top spot. Unfortunately, it’s just a bit too over-priced for our taste.
4. Nature’s Miracle Advanced Just For Cats Stain & Odor Remover
This is the second entry on our list for Nature’s Miracle. This time it’s their Advanced Just for Cats formula.
Like their formula above, this one is tough on both stains and odors. However, it’s more specifically targeted to the potent nature of cat urine. It also comes with a different scent. The Advanced Just for Cats solution comes with a soapy fresh smell. While we prefer the mild citrus of the standard version, this doesn’t smell bad at all — but it’s a bit strong.
However, it does do its job to cover up odors. And it does more than that. The odor masking actually prevents and discourages your cat from urinating in that area again. Mind you, there are some particularly stubborn cats this won’t work on, but it’s still a nice addition to the formula.
Just like the previous entry, be sure to read the instructions carefully for what surfaces and fabrics this solution can treat. If there’s ever any doubt, perform a small spot test in an unnoticeable part of the material.
5. Simple Solution Pet Urine Destroyer
This is the second entry from Simple Solution on this list. And given that the previous is our number one overall pick, this has some big shoes to fill. Despite it being a solid cleaner, it just can’t place any higher.
This particular cleaning product differs from the first for a few reasons. First, its cleaning power is awesome, but not quite as good as the Extreme version. But it does have the quality we were looking for in our top pick. It actually discourages cats from remarking the same spot.
Secondly, the nozzle we love so much from the first is missing in this version. This solution comes in an aerosol can, and we’re not too jazzed about that. Although it does provide a continuous spray, it only settles as a foam. It would be nice to see this nozzle have stream and mist modes. The constant foaming action doesn’t cut as deep. Not to mention, it depletes the can much, much faster.
Other than that, it still carries the reputation that Simple Solution holds. It’s a good quality cleaner that can be used on any water-safe surface.
6. TriNova Natural Pet Stain and Odor Remover
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly, all-natural alternative, then TriNova Natural Pet Stain and Odor Remover could be the right solution for you.
We like this formula for a few reasons. You can use it on any water-safe surface in your home. It’s also all-natural, that way you won’t have to worry about your cat endangering itself from accidental ingestion. The natural oils in this product are strong enough to mask the smells of pet odor. And it does an adequate job of cleaning.
However, we do wish this product had a little bit more cleaning power. It’s far from the best on stains when it comes to our list. It’s best used as an immediate solution instead of taking out deeply rooted stains. Also, the spray bottle is a bit subpar. When you get down towards the end of the bottle, the suction stem just doesn’t reach all the way. You might have to transfer it into a separate sprayer. For the price that this goes for, we really expect better.
7. Angry Orange Pet Odor Remover
If you’re primarily looking to get rid of pet odors, this is by far the most powerful solution on this list. Angry Orange Pet Odor Remover is very potent. As a matter of fact, it’s sold as a concentrate and must be diluted prior to use. The 8oz bottle can actually produce four 32oz spray bottles. That’s the equivalent of one gallon of pet odor remover!
The product is 100% safe and non-toxic. It’s made out of orange peel essential oils and will not cause any long-term damage if consumed. That being said, you should still keep this out of reach from small children.
However, if you’re looking for a stain remover, you should move to another product. This doesn’t do anything for stains at all. It’s just an odor remover, albeit a super powerful one. The real trick to this product is to follow the directions. If at first you do not smell the product as strong as desired, wait. It’s very easy to go overboard with this stuff.
And for all of its odor-eliminating power, it doesn’t prevent remarking.
8. OUT! Orange Oxy Stain and Odor Remover
If you’re looking for another budget alternative, OUT! Orange Oxy Stain and Odor Remover is a decent choice.
This is another enzymatic pet stain remover, but this one is also an oxidizing formula. And when stains or odors are caught right away, they don’t stand a chance. They’re quickly cleaned up and replaced with a pleasant orange smell.
However, this product is really only great for immediate stains and odors. While it will help to pull some older stains, it doesn’t really have that deep cleaning power that others on our list do. Also, the smell isn’t as strong as some of the others either (we’re looking at you Angry Orange). But in the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, this cleaner does a great job with recent stains.
It’s also safe to use on just about any surface as well. But if you’re unsure, be sure to perform a spot test. And while this product claims to prevent repeat accidents, we can’t really testify to the power of this.
9. Simple Green Cat Stain & Odor Remover
Many of you may recognize Simple Green from their standard cleaning solution. And with that product, they hit a home run. However, with Simple Green’s Cat Stain & Odor Remover, they seem to have missed the mark.
Now, this product somewhat does as advertised. It will remove minor stains; however, they need to be recent stains. Older stains will not be removed from this solution. As far as pet odor is concerned, it will temporarily remove the smell. But it seems more to mask the smell than actually remove it. You’ll need to reapply.
The smell can also be a bit off-putting. If you’re a fan of classic Pine-Sol, you may enjoy this. It’s got a strange, weak pine smell that you might find less pleasing than a citrusy or fresh scent. It also claims to prevent rewetting, but we haven’t seen any evidence that it does.
It is cheap though, and you can easily go through a bit of it on a budget.
10. Extreme Consumer Products Pet Odor Remover
The Extreme Consumer Products Pet Odor Remover clearly states that it removes pet stains on the bottle. And that is definitely not the case.
This product is very similar to Angry Orange above in that it’s only really useful for eliminating pet odors. We do like that it’s non-toxic and 100% safe for your children and cats, though. It can also be used on pretty much any surface.
The smell it puts out is a nice lavender scent that isn’t too harsh. But since it’s a relatively mild scent, it will need reapplying. The solution only really masks the smell and doesn’t eliminate it entirely. Fortunately, this product is pretty low cost compared to the others. But it just doesn’t cut it over any of our other budget choices.
Extreme Consumer Products Pet Odor Remover also claims to prevent remarking of treated areas. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to that expectation either.
As you can see above, there are a bunch of different options when it comes to cat urine, odor, and stain removers. And it can be difficult to figure out which really work, and which don’t. Hopefully, this little guide has given you some insight into what to look for in a good quality cleaner.
It’s not always about the most expensive or the “most advanced” formulas either. Some products just outright work better than others at every price point. Our top budget pick, Nature’s Miracle Just for Cats Stain & Odor Remover, works much better than its advanced formula counterpart.
But if we had to choose just one to recommend, it’s still going to be the Simple Solution Extreme Stain and Odor Remover. It does just about everything well and comes in a great spray bottle. If only it was better at preventing remarking, there’d be no need for contenders.
And has a bonus mention, if you have no real cat stains to remove and you’re just looking for an odor remover, Angry Orange is the way to go.
