  • 10 Best Natural Cat Litters – Reviews 2021

    1. World’s Best Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Corn Cat Litter – Best Overall

1World's Best Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Corn Cat Litter

The World’s Best Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Corn Cat Litter is by far the best natural cat litter out there. It is designed for multiple cats, which means it is more potent than most formulas out there. It also lasts quite a long time – up to two times longer according to the package. This litter is made from compressed corn. It instantly traps odors and forms tight clumps, making it very easy to scoop.

We also liked that it was free from silica dust. Silica dust is mostly a problem when first pouring in your cat’s litter. There can be so much in your average cat litter that breathing can become difficult. This cat litter has none of that, so you don’t have to worry about it at all. It is 99% dust-free.

You’ll love that this cat litter is safe for most septic tanks and sewer systems thanks to its high degradability. It is also more environmentally friendly because of the low dust content. It is 100% free from chemicals and artificial perfumes, so it is safer for your cats as well.

    Pros
    • Made from compressed corn
    • 99% dust-free
    • No chemicals or artificial perfumes included
    • Safe for most sewer and septic systems
    • Easy to scoop
    Cons
    • Clumping doesn’t work as well as other options

    2. Simply Pine Unscented All-Natural Pine Pellet Cat Litter – Best Value

2Simply Pine Unscented All-Natural Pine Pellet Cat Litter

Litter can add up fast, especially when you have multiple cats. When you think of how many times you have to scoop and change litter, it isn’t difficult to realize that you will be buying it a lot. In some cases, a cheaper litter may be better for your situation. In these cases, we recommend the Simply Pine Unscented All-Natural Pine Pellet Cat Litter. It is relatively cheaper than other formulas, which is still being all-natural and working for most cats.

Unlike most cat litters on this list, this one is made out of pine and wood – hence the name. It is completely chemical and additives free. Because it is formed in pellets, it has very little dust. This protects the air quality of your home and avoids the common dust problem associated with cat litter. It also can’t breed bacteria, which is the case with some of the other natural cat litters on this list.  Pine is naturally antibacterial.

Pine is very absorbable naturally, which makes this cat litter work quite well without any added chemicals. It is biodegradable and gentle on the eco-system. All these factors make it the best natural cat litter for the money.

    Pros
    • Inexpensive
    • Biodegradable
    • No additives or chemicals
    • No dust
    • Pellet-style litter
    Cons
    • Pellets tend to break up

    3. Weruva Green Tea Natural Cat Litter – Premium Choice

3Weruva Classic Fresh Scented Clumping Wood Cat Litter

If you have really picky cats or just have extra money to spend, you may want to try the Weruva Green Tea Natural Cat Litter. This cat litter is much more expensive than other options. It is one of the most expensive cat litters on the market. However, it works. This unique litter is made from hinoki wood, which is also called Japanese Cyprus. It also has added green tea, which works to keep smells down. It is quick-clumping, grain-free, clay-free, and has a low dust content. Low dust content is particularly important to us, as a dusty litter can decrease your home’s air quality.

The wood used resists humidity, reducing the likelihood that mold and bacteria will grow. It also contains catechins, which naturally stop the growth of bacteria and the development of odors. The litter clumps quickly, and the small is prevented thanks to these natural ingredients. It has a natural, fresh aroma that is unique to this cat litter.

This litter works amazingly. We found no problems with it at all. However, it is costly, which is the reason it is not our top pick. We recommend it to those who are willing to spend a lot on the cat’s litter – whether because you’re picky or your cat refuses to use anything but the best.

    Pros
    • Added green tea
    • Wood uses natural resists moisture
    • Dust-free
    • Natural aroma
    • Clumps fast
    Cons
    • Expensive

    4. sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Wheat Cat Litter

4sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Wheat Cat Litter

As you might guess from the name, sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Wheat Cat Litter is made from wheat. This may sound like an odd primary ingredient for a cat litter. However, we were pleasantly surprised by this cat litter. It is made with 100% wheat and is designed for multi-cat homes. It is an excellent option for high-traffic litter boxes and homes with multiple cats. It contains no silica dust, sodium bentonite, or chemicals of any kind.

The wheat in this cat food absorbs moisture very quickly. It provides long-lasting odor control as well, and the wheat starches make clumping fast and scooping east. It has no dyes or perfumes, which is perfect for sensitive cats and humans. It is 100% biodegradable and is one of the most eco-friendly options on the market. Wheat is very sustainable, after all.

The only negative we see with this cat litter is in its clumping style. It does clump, but the clumps are not particularly hard. They tend to spread around quite a bit, which can be frustrating. The litter is also supremely trackable, so it tends to end up all over the house.

    Pros
    • 100% biodegradable
    • Designed for multi-cat use
    • No silica dust
    • No dyes or perfumes
    Cons
    • Does not clump firmly
    • Trackable

    5. Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Walnut Cat Litter

5Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Walnut Cat Litter

The Naturally Fresh Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Walnut Cat Litter uses walnut as its main ingredient. It is made from 100% walnut shells, and that’s about it! The absorbent material neutralizes odors on impact and works very efficiently. It is biodegradable as well since it is mostly just walnuts. It does not contain any silica dust, so you don’t have to worry about your home’s air quality as much. It doesn’t stick to your cat’s paws either, which eliminates tracking through your house.

It is designed for multi-cat households, but even single-cats will get good use out of this litter. It is free of chemicals, toxins, clay, corn, and grains. It is incredibly safe for you and your furry companion, which is one reason why it scored so high on our list.

Our main complaint about this litter is that it does not work well for solids and the odors associated with them. We found that it was inferior at controlling this sort of odor, which is a problem. Furthermore, when it is used, it tends to turn to a sawdust material. This means you’ll have to change it more often since you don’t want the whole box to turn into sawdust. It also isn’t as dust-free as other options on our list.

    Pros
    • Biodegradable
    • Free from chemicals and toxins
    • Doesn’t track
    • Good for multi-cat homes
    Cons
    • Turns into sawdust over time
    • Not entirely dust-free

    6. Frisco All-Natural Unscented Clumping Grass Cat Litter

6Frisco All Natural Unscented Clumping Grass Cat Litter

This wasn’t our favorite natural cat litter, but the Frisco All-Natural Unscented Clumping Grass Cat Litter is terrible either. It is made out of one of the most sustainable ingredients – grass. Grass proliferates and is very sustainable and biodegradable, making it one of the perfect natural cat litters around. It is soft and comfortable to shift through while you’re cleaning. It does not contain any added chemicals, dyes, or fragrances, making it 100% natural.

We appreciated that it is a low-dust formula, though it isn’t entirely dust-free like other options. It clumps solid and scoops quickly. You’ll like how good it does on odor-control as well. It is very absorbable, as you’d imagine grass to be. It can be used in multi-cat households, though it isn’t necessarily designed for this purpose.

The major problem with this litter is that it tracks exceptionally easily. It is very light, which is great when you’re pouring it in. However, this also means that your cats can easily kick it up and track it all through your house. For whatever reason, many cats just don’t like it as well. It doesn’t seem to be best for picky cats for this reason. It also has a subtle hay smell, which may or may not bother you.

    Pros
    • Made of grass
    • Soft
    • Free from chemicals and dyes
    Cons
    • Trackable
    • Not for picky cats
    • Subtle hay smell

    7. Okocat Super Soft Clumping Wood Unscented Cat Litter

7Okocat Super Soft Clumping Wood Unscented Cat Litter

Let us start by saying that the Okocat Super Soft Clumping Wood Unscented Cat Litter is very inexpensive. It is a bit cheaper than other cat litters. However, it is not our favorite budget option. It is supremely trackable, though not necessarily as trackable as some of the other options we mentioned. It has a slight woody scent, though this scent is natural. Some people may not like this scent, though many reported that they didn’t mind it. It is a matter of personal preference.

This litter also isn’t dust-free in the least. It was one of the dustiest litters we reviewed, which can cause significant problems for some people. Depending on how sensitive you are to dust, this may make this litter unusable. It also impacts your home’s air quality, which can be problematic if you have sensitive people in your household.

The biodegradable wood fibers are sustainably sourced, however. This formula is also free form artificial fragrances, chemicals, toxins, dyes, and GMOs. It is a great natural formula, but it just doesn’t perform as well as most other options.

    Pros
    • Sustainably sourced
    • Free from artificial fragrances and other chemicals
    • Free from GMOs
    Cons
    • Trackable
    • Woody scent
    • Dusty

    8. Feline Pine Original Unscented Non-Clumping Wood Cat Litter

8Feline Pine Original Unscented Non-Clumping Wood Cat Litter

This is another pine-based natural cat litter. While we did like the other pine litter on our list, the Feline Pine Original Unscented Non-Clumping Wood Cat Litter did not live up to expectations. This litter is made with 100% pine and is free from harmful chemicals, additives, and synthetic perfumes. It is clay-free, which makes it significantly less dusty than other options out there.

Despite these positive aspects, there were many things we didn’t like about this litter. Firstly, it is entirely non-clumping. This is done on purpose, not on accident. Some people love that this litter doesn’t clump. However, this means you’ll have to change all the litter in the box more often, which can lead to you spending more on litter than you would otherwise. This litter isn’t the cheapest on the market, either, so the costs can rack up quite fast.

Furthermore, after they have been used, the pellets disintegrate back into sawdust. You’re supposed to shake the box gently, so the good pellets rise to the top, leaving the sawdust at the bottom. However, in practice, this doesn’t work super great. This litter tried to be innovative, but it fell flat.

    Pros
    • 100% pine
    • Less dusty than other options
    Cons
    • Non-clumping
    • Expensive
    • Pellets turn into sawdust

    9. LitterMaid Premium Scented Clumping Corn Cat Litter

9LitterMaid Premium Scented Clumping Corn Cat Litter

The LitterMaid Premium Scented Clumping Corn Cat Litter is made with real corn cob, making it a unique litter. However, we did not like this material as much as some other options. The whole corn option above that we mentioned is excellent. However, we think they used a little too much core of the corn in this formula, affecting how well it works.

It is fragrance-free and does clump. But, that’s about where the positives of this litter stop. It is supremely trackable, especially the wet-used liter. As you might imagine, this is a severe problem that can lead to a huge mess. This is mainly because the litter is so light. It just flies away and lands on everything in your home.

Furthermore, the clumps break apart easily, making it difficult to scoop. It doesn’t last as long as some of the other litters we’ve tried either. Because of this, it will tend to cost you more in the long run than other options on our list.

    Pros
    • Fragrance-free
    • Clumps
    Cons
    • Difficult to scoop
    • Trackable
    • Doesn’t last as long

    10. Nature’s Logic All Natural Pine Wood Cat Litter

10Nature's Logic All Natural Pine Unscented Non-Clumping Wood Cat Litter

The Nature’s Logic All Natural Pine Wood Cat Litter is super cheap. It is much cheaper than most of the competition and is made out of pine. This is its main draw. However, don’t let the low price pull you in. It is not the best option on the market in the least. In this case, you’re getting what you pay for.

The main problem with this litter is that it is non-clumping. While this may be a benefit for some, it is not going to work for most customers. Many customers complained about this feature. Furthermore, when the pellets are used, they break down into sawdust. This sawdust doesn’t do much to trap litter either. Instead, it tends to smell quite a bit. In other words, this litter doesn’t work as a cat litter should. It doesn’t clump and doesn’t do much to control the smell otherwise.

This litter doesn’t smell like pine either, despite the name. It is not similar to other pine products on the market. On top of this, the litter is used up rather quickly. You’ll likely find yourself changing the litter a lot and spending more money on litter overall.

    Pros
    • Inexpensive
    Cons
    • Non-clumping
    • Litter breaks down in sawdust
    • No pine smell
    • Litter is used quickly

Buyer’s Guide: Select the Best Natural Cat Litters

Choosing the perfect litter for your cat can be difficult anyway. If you’re set on choosing a natural litter for whatever reason, your job is going to be even more challenging. There are many great natural litters on the market, but many are not so good. Figuring out which ones are which can be nearly impossible.

We wrote this guide to help you on this quest. We’ll go through all the essential factors to keep in mind while shopping for natural cat litter.

    How Natural Is It?

There is no governing body deciding what can and cannot be labeled as natural litter. Because of this, practically any litter can use the label if it wants to. Thus, it is important to do your research and choose a genuinely natural litter.

Always check the ingredients used in the cat litter when figuring this out. Preferably, you want to choose a litter that is made of natural and sustainable materials. Wood, grass, grain, and nuts are all familiar, natural ingredients. You also want to make sure that the litter is made with mostly or only these natural ingredients. Clay litter with a little bit of corn thrown in isn’t going to cut it.

We also think you should avoid litter that contains a lot of unnatural ingredients, like chemicals and fragrances. Even if the litter is made with a natural ingredient, these additions cannot be environmentally friendly.

    Dust Levels

Clay-based litters can contain a lot of dust. However, many natural cat litters are dust-free. This is because they tend to use less dusty materials, like wheat. With that said, not all-natural cat litters are dust-free, though. Many produce quite a bit of dust.

The only way to know how much dust a litter produces is to check reviews like ours. Companies are not going to tell you that their litters are dusty.

Avoiding dust is important because it can negatively affect your home’s air quality, which can have adverse effects on you and your cat’s health. It is particularly important to avoid dust around those with respiratory problems.

    Clumping

In most cases, you want your cat’s litter to clump. Otherwise, you’re going to have a hard time changing it. Some unique and innovative systems do not clump, however. Still, some of these work better than others. If you just want to stick with what you know, choose a litter that clumps. If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone, consider a litter that is designed to fight odors differently.

The only way to know if you prefer or don’t prefer a different system is to try it out.

    Fragrance

Most of these litters do not include any added fragrance, which is often made with synthetic materials. However, they do smell like something in most cases. They can smell like a recently cut Christmas tree or like moldy wood. Even though they are natural, how they smell matters.

Different people are going to prefer different smells. Whenever a cat litter had an interesting smell that some may find unpleasant, we pointed it out in our reviews. This doesn’t mean you may dislike the smell, but it may be something to consider if your nose is particularly sensitive.

    cat paw dividerConclusion

There are many different natural cat litters on the market, with more and more being designed every day. Our top pick for best natural cat litters is currently the World’s Best Multi-Cat Unscented Clumping Corn Cat Litter. It is dust-free and clumps well, on top of being decently inexpensive. We also liked that it is friendly to most septic tanks and sewer systems. Of course, since it is made of corn, it is also biodegradable.

We also liked the Simply Pine Unscented All-Natural Pine Pellet Cat Litter for those who need to stick to a budget. This is a pellet-style litter that is entirely biodegradable. It smells lovely like you would expect a pine litter to smell. However, it contains no added fragrances or chemicals.

Hopefully, this article helped you find the perfect natural cat litter for your furry felines. There are tons of different litters on the market these days that are made out of unique materials. There is no reason to stick to the same-old clay litter you’ve been using.
