Cats love to scratch. Unfortunately, we can’t always control what our cats decide they want to scratch. Often, it’s the things we want them to scratch the least! Furniture, doorways, walls, and more are all subject to the vicious claws on your feline friends. But no-scratch sprays can offer a simple solution. Just spray it on the area they’re scratching and your cat will be repelled!
Sounds like a miracle, but is it too good to be true? We wanted to see for ourselves, so we ordered every no-scratch spray for cats that we could find and tested them all. Some of them were great, others were mediocre. None of them hurt our cats, but some of them were less than pleasant for everyone involved. To help you sort through the products and pick the right one for you and your cat, we’ve written up the following eight reviews comparing what we learned about each of these popular no-scratch sprays.

The 8 Best No-Scratch Spray for Cats – Reviews 2020
1. Comfort Zone Spray & Scratch Control Spray – Best Overall
The biggest issue with most of the no-scratch sprays we tested was that they just wouldn’t work for every cat. They may be effective with some pets but have no effect whatsoever on others. But Comfort Zone is so sure of their Spray & Scratch Control Spray that they’re willing to put their money where their mouth is and offer a money-back satisfaction guarantee, something we didn’t see on many other products we tested. This product lived up to the hype and managed to stop all of the cats from scratching, so we didn’t get any of our money back.
This spray can be used in several ways. It’s great for treating cat scratch targets like walls, trim, furniture, and more. Anywhere your cat scratches can be sprayed and it will stop them from continuing to scratch there. It’s safe for wood, upholstery, and more, so it won’t stain or leave any residue behind. This spray is also great for treating nervous cats as it helps calm them down for trips in the vehicle or visits to the vet. We just wish the bottle had more than two ounces!
2. Pet Organics No Scratch Spray – Best Value
This no-scratch spray from Pet Organics solves our only complaint with our top recommended spray; it’s got plenty in the bottle. This bottle contains 16 ounces, so you should be able to get many applications out of it. Despite the large volume of spray included, the bottle is still priced very affordably, which is part of why we believe it’s the best no-scratch spray for cats for the money. Of course, a low price wouldn’t mean much if the product didn’t work. In our experience, this spray was very effective on most cats. However, it seemed to have almost no effect on certain cats, so performance is hit or miss at best.
While some of the sprays we tested had harsh odors that would stick to anything you sprayed, the Pet Organics no-scratch spray is a low-odor formula that we couldn’t smell at all. It also leaves no stains, making it safe for applying on furniture, walls, and anywhere else your cat happens to scratch. We love the combination of low price and high performance, so if this product worked with every cat we tried it on, it probably would have topped our list.
3. Petsvv Cat Scratch Deterrent Spray – Premium Choice
Our pet’s safety is always of utmost concern, which is why we liked this cat scratch deterrent spray from Petsvv. It’s non-toxic and alcohol-free with no harsh chemicals or additives. This means it’s completely safe for your furry friends and won’t hurt your pets or your belongings. You can spray it on any target safely so your cat will stop scratching and it won’t stain or damage anything. Even better, this product contains tea tree oil and other extracts to help heal your cats where they’ve scratched themselves. If your cat has wounds from over-scratching, then this product can help them stop scratching and heal quicker.
This is a pretty expensive product. You only get about six ounces in a bottle, so it also doesn’t last very long. Some of the cats we used it with stopped scratching immediately and didn’t return. But others seemed unphased by this spray and pretty much ignored it. Unfortunately, that seems to be a common occurrence with no-scratch sprays. Luckily, this one had no strong odors and left no residue behind. Overall, it worked well on about 75% of our cats. We just wish it would work with the other 25% as well.
4. SEGMINISMART Cat Scratch Deterrent Spray
Most of us don’t like the idea of using excess chemicals on ourselves, let alone our furry companions. That’s why the SEGMINISMART cat scratch deterrent spray is made with gentle botanical ingredients that are natural and safe. It’s got a pleasant, natural odor that we found appealing but our cats did not. It’s non-staining, so it’s safe to apply to almost any surface. Spray a few squirts onto the item that your cat is scratching and voila, no more scratching. Well, that’s the idea anyway. Like most of the products we tested, this spray works a good portion of the time but was ignored completely by some felines.
We were quite surprised when we received the SEGMINISMART spray since the label on the bottle was written entirely in Chinese! Naturally, this meant we couldn’t read the label and we weren’t even positive it was the right stuff at first. It was, but we were still quite put-off by the foreign label. The bottle is also tiny, containing less than 3.5 ounces, so expect it to run out quickly. That’s a real downer because this stuff isn’t cheap, even though you get so little.
5. SmartyKat Scratch Not Training Spray
The SmartyKat Scratch Not Training Spray is one of the more expensive sprays that we tested. The bottle is pretty sizable though, holding 13.5 ounces, many times larger than some of the sprays we’ve used. It’s safe for pets and safe for your furniture as well. This one worked well with a lot of the cats we tested it on. But the problem is that it didn’t last. This spray wore off after a few days and needed to be reapplied. Even though the bottle was larger, we ended up going through it much faster than many of the other products in smaller bottles. The constant re-applying also made the noticeable odor stronger. The odor wasn’t too unpleasant, but it wasn’t particularly fragrant either. In the end, this wasn’t one of our favorite sprays and we don’t recommend it.
6. Nature’s Miracle No-Scratch Cat Deterrent Spray
Nature’s Miracle No-Scratch Cat Deterrent Spray was another product that offered spotty performance. For some cats, it was a complete deterrent that stopped them from scratching on the area immediately. But other cats seemed like they didn’t even notice a difference. And worst, some cats seemed to actually like the odor and were attracted to it more than before we sprayed it! Even for the cats it worked with, it wore off very quickly. This meant we had to reapply it every day if we wanted to keep the cats from scratching.
Luckily, this product is all-natural, so you won’t be adding a whole bunch of harsh chemicals into the air in your house with all of those re-applications. It’s completely safe for you and your pets, though the warning label says not to spray your cat directly. This spray is on the affordable side of the price spectrum, and the bottle even includes a decent eight ounces of spray. It didn’t stain any of our furniture or fixtures, but that doesn’t really matter when it only worked on about half the cats we tested it with or less.
7. Pet MasterMind Claw Withdraw Stop Cat Scratching Spray
The Claw Withdraw stop cat scratching spray from Pet MasterMind is a daily use formula that’s supposed to stop your cat’s bad scratching habit. It features an all-natural blend that’s free of harsh chemicals, making it safe for you, your pets, your family, and your home. It’s a non-staining formula that won’t hurt your home or your furniture either. The best part is that it’s covered by a 365-day satisfaction guarantee, so if it doesn’t work with your cat, you’ll get your money back. This is an important detail because it didn’t work with most of our cats. In fact, some of them seemed to really like this scent and wanted to scratch at it more than before we applied it.
For the cats this product worked with, it was only effective for a few hours. We found that morning and evening applications were necessary to achieve the desired results. Considering that this is one of the more expensive products, that can make the cost add up pretty quickly.
8. Emmy’s Best Stop The Scratch Cat Deterrent Spray
The Scratch Cat Deterrent Spray from Emmy’s Best Pet Products is a safe and effective way to prevent your cats from scratching. Well, some of them, for a short time. We found that this product only worked with about a third of the cats we tested it with. It only lasted a few hours before it needed to be reapplied though. You get eight ounces in a bottle, but with so many applications necessary, you’ll run out pretty quickly. It’s a pretty expensive bottle to begin with, so replacing it constantly is going to get pricey.
The non-toxic formula that makes up the Emmy’s Best spray won’t give any adverse reactions with the constant re-applying you’ll be doing. However, it’s got a strong odor that did add up and became a bit overwhelming after several applications each day. But we only managed to continue this for a couple of days before the pump part of the bottle stopped working. This product is at the bottom of our list because we weren’t impressed with it in the least. We don’t recommend you pick this spray when there are several effective products available that offer a much-improved value.
Our cats are getting pretty tired of us spraying all over our homes to test these products. But we’re pretty happy with the lack of new scratches being gouged into our walls and furniture! We’ve put everything we learned during testing into our reviews, so you should already know which products shined. Our favorite overall was the Comfort Zone Spray & Scratch Control Spray. It’s completely safe for your pets and everything in your home, plus, you can use it to calm a nervous cat. Even better, it’s covered by a money-back satisfaction guarantee, so you know you’ll be pleased or you’ll get paid back for your investment.
The Pet Organics No-Scratch Spray was our pick for best value. It was effective with most cats we tested it with, didn’t leave any stains, came in a large 16-ounce bottle, and was priced very affordably. But the more expensive Petsvv Cat Scratch Deterrent Spray was our premium product pick. It won’t stain, it’s safe for use on your furniture and home, and it can even help heal scratch wounds on your cat. You may have to test a couple to find one that works with your pet, but these work with most cats and are a safe and excellent option to deter them from scratching.
