Along their back, they will have a vertical line down their spine. On their sides, they will have a large solid patch, with one or more unbroken rings circling it. Both sides should be symmetrical. Cats should have a double row of vertical “buttons” on their chest and stomach.

A mackerel tabby Persian will have dense and clearly defined narrow markings. Their legs will have narrow bracelets of color that come up to meet their body markings. divider-catclaw1Persian Cat Varieties

While they might not be accepted by every breed society, you may see Persian cats referred to as belonging to a certain variety. It’s worth knowing what these are, especially if you’re looking for a kitten and are wondering what the differences might be!

98. Doll Face Persian

This is the Old Fashioned or Traditional Persian. Breeders of this variety believe them to be the closest variant to the original Persian cats of old. Doll Face Persians do not have the extremely shortened muzzle of some other varieties. Their noses are a standard length, meaning they can suffer from fewer complications involving their breathing and eyes.

99. Peke-Face Persian Cat

The Peke-Face Persian is the “show” variant that many of us now recognize as a Persian. Their name is inspired by the similarities in their facial features to the Pekingese dog. The flat, or brachycephalic, face shape of this Persian variant is caused by a genetic mutation, and while it gives them a look that is favored by breeders, the shortened muzzle can cause extreme difficulties for these cats when it comes to breathing. They can also have eye problems, including non-drainage and staining.

These aren’t technically considered the same breed as the Persian by many breed societies, but they are basically the shorthaired version! Unfortunately, they also share many of the same health problems as the Peke-face Persian, including breathing difficulties and eye problems.

101. Teacup Persian Cat

You may see Teacup Persians being advertised and think that there’s nothing cuter, but these cats can have serious health issues. Trying to selectively breed a cat with existing health conditions like the Persian into a smaller version of itself can just exacerbate these issues. For example, teacup Persians can have considerable issues with their breathing. As with many other small breeds, they can also have problems controlling their body temperature and are sensitive to stressful situations. This isn’t a variant that is particularly recommended due to their health problems.
