The Ragdoll cat breed is a popular pet thanks to its colorpoint coat and striking blue eyes. These cats are large and muscular but offer a docile and affectionate temperament that makes them a great choice for families with kids and single owners looking for a companion animal.
Developed by American breeder Ann Baer in the 1960s, Ragdoll cats are one of the rarer and more sought-after breeds. Fortunately, Virginia has several reputable Ragdoll cat breeders to choose from. Check out the best options for breeders and Ragdoll cats for sale in Virginia.
The 2 Ragdoll Cat Breeders in Virginia
1. Kimura Dolls
- Hampton Roads, VA
Kimura Dolls is a husband-and-wife breeder team that promotes proper Ragdoll cat breed standards. This breeder team is dual registered with the International Cat Association and the Cat Fanciers’ Association.
As working professionals and hobby breeders, the Kimura Dolls breeders raise parents and kittens in their home with their German Shepherds, so they come with socialization experience around dogs. They have limited litters and may require a waitlist.
Most kittens are offered with limited breeding rights and are intended for family homes and forever pets. All kittens come with veterinary records for exams, vaccinations, deworming, a kitten care package, 30-day pet insurance, and a 2-year health guarantee.
2. Ridgeview Ragdolls
- Saint Paul, VA
Ridgeview Ragdolls prides itself on quality kittens as family pets. The litters are available with bicolor, mink, sepia, and solid coats. Both the adults and kittens are registered with The International Cat Association and come with genetic clearances for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disorder.
Kittens are available to take home around 12 or 13 weeks of age. With your kitten, you’ll receive vaccination and deworming records, exam records, and spaying or neutering unless you purchase a kitten with breeding rights. Kittens are litter box trained before going to their forever home, and you’ll also receive a supply of food and toys.
A Word of Caution with Cat Mills
Most people are familiar with puppy mills, but cat/kitten mills are nearly as prevalent. Like puppy mills, kitten mills are places where cats are bred and sold in volume, usually with a disregard for ethics. Both the parents and kittens in these mills are abused and neglected, creating potential behavioral and health problems for future adopters. Kittens from kitten mills often have untreated illnesses, physical deformities, infections, and worms.
The best way to avoid supporting kitten mills is by choosing a reputable breeder for your Ragdoll cat. Kitten mills are about quick turnover without regard for the health and well-being of the cats and kittens. Look for breeders that offer health guarantees, valid pedigrees, and records of veterinary care. Most reputable breeders won’t ship kittens and won’t allow kittens to go to their new owners before 10 weeks of age, but the longer you can wait, the better.
When it comes down to it, follow your gut. A breeder that shows care and compassion for their cats, transparency with their processes, strict guidelines for breeding rights, spaying and neutering, and veterinary care is likely a reputable breeder.
